SUMMARY:Taking Care of Our Home: Northeastern Indigenous Land Stewardship Practices and Caring for the Land Today
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: What did the Northeastern landscape look like before contact? How did Indigenous peoples of the region steward the land\, and why did their methods work so well to sustain healthy\, resilient\, biodiverse landscapes that provided for their human inhabitants? We will explore these questions as well as consider what we are losing with the loss of this stewardship. This webinar will also introduce the Indigenous Landscape Initiative (In Land)\, a new organization devoted to involving Native and non-Native communities in reviving Native stewardship practices to care for our home – for ecological health\, food for people\, and building relationships with the land and each other. \nSpeaker: Shlomiya Lightfoot is the founder and executive director of the Indigenous Landscape Initiative (In Land). She has a Bachelor’s degree in biology with an ecology focus\, and her Ph.D. research examined stakeholder involvement in environmental decision-making. Much of Shlomiya’s work has been devoted to the intersection of environmental and human wellbeing\, helping to make sure people from all walks of life can contribute to\, and benefit from\, efforts to care for our planet. \nRegistration and full information can be found here: https://www.firesciencenorthatlantic.org/indigenous-landscape-initiative

SUMMARY:NAFSE Fire & Fire History Mini-Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The NAFSE Fire & Fire History Working Group is hosting its second mini-symposium. The event will take place on Monday\, October 6\, 2025 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT. \nWith this event\, we bring together fire researchers and practitioners to share their work\, knowledge\, and passion. We hope you can join us for a series of short presentations\, Q & A and (time permitting) further discussion. \nOur speakers will cover a range of topics\, including the historic to contemporary interaction between fire and key species such as pitch pine and red oak\, and some of the paleoecology techniques used in reconstructing vegetation history. Our speakers are as follows… \n\nDrew Barton (University of Maine) on long-term fire and land use dynamics in coastal Maine pitch pine.\nAndrea Nurse (University of Maine) on palynology (fossil pollen) for land use management.\nMatthew Vadeboncoeur (University of New Hampshire) on the role of fire in northern red oak recruitment and establishment.\n\nWe expect an hour of presentations followed by moderated Q & A. We hope to see you there! \nRegistration and full information can be found here: https://www.firesciencenorthatlantic.org/fire-and-fire-history-mini-symposium

SUMMARY:New Jersey Fire Camp 2024
DESCRIPTION:In cooperation with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service\, we are hosting a field based workshop in May 2024 for students interested in careers in fire in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The Fire Camp will provide opportunities for students and early-career natural resource professionals to develop technical skills through the ecological application of prescribed fire. \nThe Fire Camp will accept up to 15 persons to participate in a 4-day session that explores various prescribed fire applications for hazardous fuel reduction\, habitat management\, silviculture\, and/or other ecological objectives. Through this hands-on program\, participants have have opportunities to work on individual tasks in open National Wildland Coordinating Group (NWCG) Position Task Books (PTB); hone technical skills relating to prescribed fire application; and expand their understanding of fuels\, fire behavior\, and fire ecology. Participants will work in the New Jersey pinelands and engage with fire practitioners\, fire scientists\, foresters\, and other natural resource professionals to supplement fire effects and fire use learning. \nThe fee for Fire Camp participation\, which will cover meals\, lodging\, and all Camp activities\, is $100. Financial assistance is available by writing to NAFSEhelp@gmail.com (once accepted). \nAdditional participation requirements are DETAILED HERE – please read the entire document thoroughly before applying (deadline for applications is March 3rd at 11:59 pm). \nTo learn more about the New Jersey Fire Camp\, please CLICK HERE to read about the Fire Camp held in 2022. \nAPPLY HERE: New Jersey Fire Camp 2024 (google.com)Please contact us with any questions at NAFSEhelp@gmail.com
