SUMMARY:Fueling Collaboration: Fire History as a Bridge Between Ecological Knowledge Systems
DESCRIPTION:This panel discussion will explore how different types of fire history information (Indigenous Knowledge and physical archives)\, when considered together\, provide improved context for understanding the ecologies and processes that are linked to the restoration and stewardship of fire-adapted communities. The panelists include Indigenous Knowledge holders and practitioners\, and experts in tree-ring\, sedimentary\, and archeological fire history\, who have collaboratively used fire history information to bridge cultures and knowledge systems. The discussion will use case studies in the Upper Great Lakes Region where a diverse set of partners wove these types of knowledge together to restore culture fire to the benefit of globally-rare pine barrens communities. \n\nThis panel discussion has been approved for 1.5 Category 1 CFE’s by the Society of American Foresters. \nRegister here: https://www.fuelingcollab.com/episode-4-1

SUMMARY:Integrating Public Health into Forest and Fire Management
DESCRIPTION:Increasing wildfire size and severity across the western United States has created an environmental and social crisis that must be approached from a transdisciplinary perspective. Climate change and more than a century of fire exclusion and wildfire suppression have led to contemporary wildfires with more severe environmental impacts and human smoke exposure. Wildfires increase smoke exposure for broad swaths of the US population\, though outdoor workers and socially disadvantaged groups with limited adaptive capacity can be disproportionally exposed. Scientists\, planners\, foresters and fire managers\, fire safety\, air quality\, and public health practitioners must collaboratively work together to protect both human and forest health. \nRegister here. \nDr. Savannah D’Evelyn is an environmental health scientist and bio-social scientist with expertise in environmental toxicology\, community-based participatory research (CBPR)\, air pollution exposure\, and implementation science. Her work centers on understanding the impacts of climate change on communities through the research themes of community action\, air pollution exposure\, and climate adaptation. Dr. D’Evelyn’s work on wildfire smoke at the University of Washington utilizes interdisciplinary collaborative approaches to work across forestry\, climate\, air quality\, and health disciplines to move toward both fire- and smoke-ready communities. In her role as an environmental consultant for the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment\, Dr. D’Evelyn is working to improve access to air quality data by expanding monitoring networks across Colorado schools. \nThe International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF)\, the Pau Costa Foundation (PCF)\, and the Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) organize the Partner Webinar Series\, a monthly series of webinars to bring together diverse voices from the global wildland fire community. If you would like to suggest a topic or speaker for this series\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:Fueling Collaboration: The Future is Smoky
DESCRIPTION:With increasing wildfire activity due to changes in climate\, smoke will likely become more prevalent and continue to have an effect on society. Earlier this year\, smoke from Canada wildfires lowered air quality in the eastern U.S. to its worst levels in recorded history. As the climate heats up and creates drier conditions\, smoky skies will grow increasingly common. Health concerns and prescribed burning actions needed to restore functioning ecosystems will be impacted by already smoky conditions across the country. Panelists include research meteorologists\, air quality experts\, and fire practitioners. Together\, they will explore how we can address and adapt to a smoky future. \nThis panel discussion has been approved for 1.5 Category 1 CFE’s by the Society of American Foresters. \nRegister here: https://www.fuelingcollab.com/episode-4-2

SUMMARY:Forests\, Fires\, and Faucets: How a drinking water utility uses forest management as a key source water protection strategy
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Raven Lawson (Watershed Protection Manager) and Bryan Rupar (Land Conservation Coordinator)\, Central Arkansas Water \nDate: December 19\, 2023\, 1:00 – 2:00 PM (central time) \nRegister here (required): https://umsystem.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJElf-CqqzkiE9GJ16wfsUapL49i4Sa3JPQg  \nCentral Arkansas Water’s (CAW) Watershed Protection Program (Program) has received international recognition as a leader of innovative approaches to managing natural resources for the purpose of drinking water protection. The Program’s goals are to protect\, restore\, and enhance the natural watershed environment of their two water sources through a variety of pollution prevention\, watershed\, and source water protection approaches; part of an overall utility strategy to maintain and enhance ecological and community sustainability. \nThis webinar will focus on the Program’s fifteen-year history and their approach to watershed-scale conservation through acquisition and forested land management practices. The presentation will showcase how active forest management plays a role in the protection of drinking water sources and will highlight how CAW’s Program has built internal and external capacity to take their acres of forests treated with prescribed fire from a decades-long yearly average of about 350 acres to over 2\,500 acres\, while also covering the correlation of ecological timber thinning and unpaved roads management to drinking water quality.

SUMMARY:Understanding Social Vulnerability Models
DESCRIPTION:This webinar from the Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network will feature presentations from Professor Christopher Emrich and Professor Ronald Schumann who have worked extensively on social vulnerability definitions and modeling for a variety of natural hazards\, including wildfire. Together\, we’ll discuss: what does social vulnerability mean? How are vulnerability models built\, and what data is included or missing? \nOur speakers will also cover: how the creation of social vulnerability models impacts the maps and outputs that are created (and what an impact that has on grants\, etc.); the importance of tailoring vulnerability models to local context and what happens if you don’t include local information. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZApde6tqTotGtca1gb2Uy5f07V4q-giE5x-#/registration

SUMMARY:Fueling Collaboration: Phenology of Fire: Listening to the Plants and Animals
DESCRIPTION:Season of fire. Opening the burn window. Both of these focus on one of the elements that make up a fire regime – frequency\, intensity/severity\, extent/scale\, and seasonality. Decades of spring-and/or autumn-centric fire can cause a site or landscape to respond very differently than when burned repeatedly across all flammable seasons. Summer burns can produce differing fire effects including increased species richness averages\, biomass\, and stem counts (especially forbs)\, and breaking up the plant species dominance resulting from dormant season burn windows. Our panelists will bring fresh voices to how we can learn from listening to our fire-dependent plants and animals and let the fire effects lead us toward desired outcomes. \nThis panel discussion has been approved for 1.5 Category 1 CFE’s by the Society of American Foresters. \nRegister here: https://www.fuelingcollab.com/episode-4-3
